Roger Shattuck's The Forbidden Experiment tells the story of the Wild Boy of Aveyron, a child around nine years of age who was discovered in the woods in southern France in 1800. Jean Itard, a young medical student, developed new educational methods to reach and teach the boy, now named Victor.

The story inspired more than just Shattuck's book, highly praised by Oliver Sacks among others: it was turned into a film by French New Wave director François Truffaut.

On September 9th at 8:30pm, Film Forum in New York City will screen The Wild Child with an introduction by Jed Perl, who wrote the introduction to the new NYRB Classics edition of The Forbidden Experiment
