NYU Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò presents 'Translating Eugenio Montale', a reading and panel discussion with contributors to the recent publications of Butterfly of Dinard (NYRB Classics) and Late Montale (NYRB Poets). Join Oonagh Stransky and Marla Moffa—translators of Butterfly—and Jonathan Galassi—author of the introduction to Butterfly and translator of several volumes of Montale's poetry—in celebration of the Nobel Prize winning author and these two new translations.

Butterfly of Dinard is a collection of fifty of Montale's short stories—pieces whose sprightliness, subtle irony, and conversational ease defy the limits of traditional fiction. Taken together, they form a sort of autobiographical novel, evoking people, objects, and animals dear to the poet, while simultaneously shedding light on the social, cultural, and political events of the day.

Late Montale is a generous selection of the poems that Montale wrote in the last decade of his life, including many drawn from notebooks he entrusted to his housekeeper, which appear here in English for the first time.

This event is open to the public.
