Penick for a reading of his latest book, The Oceans of Cruelty: Twenty-Five Tales of a Corpse-Spirit (NYRB Classics 2024), a retelling of the Hindi Baitâl Pachchisi. Dating back several thousand years, this sequence of twenty-five tales probes the primordial, murky depths of stories—why we tell them, how they fit (or fail to fit) into our worlds, their hallucinatory power, even their more sinister capacity to capture and imprison.
